THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY EMERGING GLOBAL LEADER SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (AU EGLS)

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity. Bringing together the best of AU — academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement — the AU Emerging Global Leader achieves, inspires, and serves with vision. The AU EGL is dedicated to positive civic and social change, and to returning home to improve under-resourced, underserved communities in his/her home country.

The scholarship provides full tuition, fees, room and board for one first-year (freshman) high-achieving international student who will need a visa to study in the United States (preference will be for those who need an F-1 or J-1 student visa). It is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance. U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents or dual citizens of the U.S. and another country, are not eligible to apply.

To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must be secondary school students (not university students) applying as first-year (freshman) students for the fall (August) 2013 semester.

2013 MMMF GRANTS FOR WOMEN IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES TO STUDY IN US & CANADA

Margaret Mcnamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) is offering women from developing countries grants to support their study in the US and Canada. The scholarship is open students from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada.

Worth of Awards

The MMMF awards grants of approximately $12,000 each; grants are not renewable.  The MMMF also typically invites the recipients to Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honour. 

A Woman is Eligible to Apply if she:

  1. has a record of service to women and children and a commitment to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries
  2. resides in the U.S. or Canada at the time she submits the application
  3. is enrolled (in residence) at an accredited U.S. or Canadian educational institution for the academic year 2012-2013, and intends to be enrolled for the 2013-2014 academic year
  4. will use the grant toward the completion of her degree
  5. is a national of a lower or middle income developing member country, as designated by the MMMF Country Eligibility List
  6. is not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, permanent U.S. resident or Canadian Landed Immigrant
  7. intends to return to her country (or other developing country) within two years of completing use of the MMMF grant and perform at least two years of service
  8. demonstrates financial need and satisfactory academic performance
  9. is at least 25 years old by December 31, 2012
  10. is not related to a World Bank Group staff member or his/her spouse

There are no exceptions to the MMMF educational grant criteria listed above.

THE WADSWORTH AFRICAN FELLOWSHIPS

The Wadsworth African Fellowships are intended to provide support for African students undertaking study leading to a Ph.D. at a South African university that can provide them with international-level training in anthropology (including biological anthropology and archaeology). Currently applications to the University of Witwatersrand or The University of Cape Town are given priority.

The annual fellowship is $17,500 and can be used towards travel, living expenses, tuition, student fees, insurance, books, research expenses, and any other relevant categories of expenditure while studying at the Host institution. The fellowship is renewable for up to two additional years upon successful completion of each preceding year’s study. A separate application can be made for an additional year of funding to support dissertation write-up.

The deadline for the Wadsworth African Fellowship Program is December 15 and final decisions are made by January 15. Application materials are available 3 months before the application deadline. Applicants must use the most recent application form. They must also submit their application materials using the Foundation’s online submission procedure as well as send two printed copies to the Foundation by regular mail. CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT MBA SCHOLARSHIPS, FOR NIGERIANS

Cranfield University School of Management is offering two scholarships to Nigerians who are accepted into its MBA programme. The Scholarships are open to successful MBA candidates from Nigeria who want to pursue a full-time MBA at Cranfield School of Management.

Worth of Scholarships: £12,000 towards the tuition fees.

Number of awards: Two

Eligibility: Self-funded Nigerian nationals

The selection criteria for the scholarships will be based on both:

  • Strength of the application: an applicant’s achievements, academic credentials, professional track record and personal merit.
  • The interviewer’s report: an assessment of the applicant’s communication and interpersonal skills, leadership and/or entrepreneurial potential as well as the candidate’s likely contribution to the professional and cultural make-up of the cohort.

2013 AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK (ADB) INTERNSHIPS FOR AFRICAN STUDENTS

Students from member states of the African Development Bank are invited to apply for an internship in the bank. The broad objectives of the program are to:

  • Provide students with an opportunity to acquire professional and practical experience at the African Development Bank.
  • Provide the Bank with a pool of potential candidates for future recruitment purposes.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Applicants must:

  • Be students, aged between eighteen (18) to thirty (30) years, and currently enrolled in a master’s level degree program or its equivalent in a recognized public or private institution of higher learning. The candidate can apply for an internship within one year of having obtained such a degree.
  • Provide a letter from their school confirming their enrollment.
  • Be citizens of one of the Bank’s member countries.
  • Be fluent in, at least, one of the Bank’s working languages (English or French).

The timing for the 2013 program is as follows:

  • Winter – Session I: Internships starts in January through March 2013. Application period from July 9, 2012 to October 15, 2012.
  • Summer – Session II: Internships start in June through August 2013. Application period from December 1, 2012 to March 1, 2013.

Job description

  • To conduct research as part of the research project “Making National Citizens: Analyzing the Impact of Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps”, with the joint aim to contribute to the successful completion of this research project and to obtain a PhD degree in Social Sciences from the KU Leuven
  • The research project will last 4 years and will be conducted under the supervision of assistant professor Arnim Langer.

Profile

  • The applicant should have completed a Master’s degree in sociology, economics, political science, developmental studies or any other closely related subject;
  • The applicant should have an excellent academic record: A first class honours degree or its equivalent or an outstanding academic record at Master’s level is necessary (noting that an outstanding Master’s degree can compensate for a moderate first degree performance);
  • The applicant should have excellent analytical and writing skills (any peer-reviewed publications will be an advantage)
  • The applicant should have considerable experience with quantitative research and/or should be able to statistically analyze survey data;
  • Experience in survey research and methodology will be an advantage, as is research experience in Nigeria

  1. Great opportunities. Thanks Zainab. This is altruism exemplified. I believe it’s a vain thing to complain about the world being too dark without making efforts to light one’s corner of it. This is a step towards remedying some maladies combating Nigerian students. Hope others get inspired and follow suit.
    I post essay contests on my blog, and I don’t place adverts. So I humbly believe my service is also altruistic.
