Photos from the “20 Years of Democracy in Nigeria: 1999-2019” in December 2019

This is coming rather late, but better now than never.

In December 2019, I was back in Oxford for a conference on “20 Years of Democracy in Nigeria: 1999-2019“. The conference was convened by Professor Wale Adebanwi on 6th December at St. Antony’s College and the Blavatnik School of Government. It started with a keynote address by as Professor Larry Diamond, professor of Sociology and Political Science at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, who reflected on different aspects of 20 years of the democratic process and its implications at all levels – in Nigeria and beyond.

The conference brought together many leading experts on Nigeria including Eghosa Osaghae, Adigun Agbaje, Peter Lewis, Ricardo Soares de Oliviera, Nic Cheeseman, Ebenezer Obadare, Rotimi Suberu, Ebenezer Obadare, Matthew Page, Aliyu Modibbo Umar, Jibrin Ibrahim, Adam Higazi and Idayat Hassan. The special guests as Rt Hon Aminu Tambwal, the Governor of Sokoto State and Dr Kayode Fayemi, the Governor of Ekiti State also spoke at the plenary in the evening.

I participated in the session on “The Political Economy of Oil”. The full programme is available here.

  1. Any pointer, any at all that may just give a little hope (that darned thing again) about our suboptimal performance as a nation? Tambuwal is still governor. So is Fayemi. Stellar performance in office? Very easily debatable. Like they say, jury is still out though everyone knows the verdict.
I hope you can sense the weariness..

  2. Good morning Doc,
Fantastic work. Just downloaded your paper published by Oxford in December. I do wish to obtain the programme for this conference though. Gone through the site but can’t quite figure where to obtain it. You could just support me with a link. It would be highly appreciated. It would certainly be interesting rummaging through the thoughts of such erudite intelligentsia, especially Prof Diamond.
Thanks again in anticipation of your apt response. Have a great lockdown.
